Going Further is back for 2016 and here at the Grace Collective we couldn’t be more excited! We are partnering with Presbytarian Youth Ministry to be part of Going Further in February 2016. It’s an incredible week in community to consider God’s loving of us and living the Jesus way as we head into the year with our life, career, studies and church. Continue reading
Back in February, I had the privilege of attending a camp called Going Further. It is a camp for young adults from 18-30 about, as you can probably tell, “going further” in discipleship. On a sunny Friday morning, around 60 young Presbyterians and Anglicans descended on the beautiful Orama community on Great Barrier Island for one pretty epic week.
For me, it was a deeply formative experience.
Too often, I think, Christian camps are orientated mostly around the head (theology and content), or mostly around the heart (Holy Spirit stuff), or mostly just on activities. It is a difficult balance to strike. The thing I most appreciated about Going Further (apart from the awesome people) was the holistic nature of the content: we had amazing sermons form Kindra Green, a pastor from San Diego working with the refugee community there; creative and integrated worship led by worship songwriter and Presbyterian minister Malcolm Gordon; habitation practices and spiritual disciplines such as morning and evening prayers, lectio divina, and meditation; creation care; all mixed in with small group discussions and lots of free time to just BE.
All of this in a stunning, remote location with a pier to jump off, kayaking, bushwalks to waterfalls, volleyball, and other activities on our doorstep. You start to get the idea.
For the past two years we have kicked off the year with a weekend away together in a beautiful location. In February this year we camped at Martin’s Bay on the stunning Mahurangi Peninsula, and we can’t wait to continue or summer camp tradition in 2015!
But this summer our camp is going to be a whole new level of amazing – it won’t just be a weekend away, but a whole week… and on the stunning Great Barrier Island!

Following the risen Jesus personally and as part of his body – the church – is the call on our lives – but it is seldom straightforward. We know there must be more, but get distracted, overwhelmed and on occasions discouraged looking for the reality. Going beyond the superficial noise and easy words to the stuff that really matters requires clearing some space to receive and reflect on what’s happening.
It is a time to become more ourselves, to be refreshed by the Holy Spirit, to hear the voice of Jesus, connect in community and to be re-formed in order to go further as God’s people in this complex, beautiful and needy world.
Kindra Green is the key speaker – Kindra ministers incarnationally in City Heights: the most impoverished, crime-ridden and diverse community in San Diego. She is an urban pastor and missionary serving the refugee community and leading teams to love, serve and share Jesus with their neighbors (who are often Muslim, atheist and Hindu). She works on creating and cultivating renewed forms of church and discipleship on the leadership team of Coast Vineyard Church. She has been a Pastor of Creative Arts and Discipling for five years, and prior to that Director of Youth Ministries for a church denomination in three US states She brings gifts and experience of discerning and communicating Christ’s word for both our times and in its meaning for the lives of young adults.
